Christmas Cake Story in India

As a child in a modest Bengali household, the anticipation of whats in my lunch box today specially after seeing 'Bapuji' cakes lying on the breakfast table which my father bought in the morning was immense. At that point of time, the rich brown plum cake during Christmas was always more special with the adults in the family than with the children. We children some why loved the small tiffin cakes and the cream roles. Later when sophisticated bakeries such as 'Jolojog' came to existence the love for the humble cake was replaces by pastries and richly frosted cakes.

However now that we are in our 30's, the love for pastries is again somewhat mild, thanks to health journals, posts, nutritionists we now know that we should heavily cut our sugar intake more so if our lifestyle is sedentary. So the humble rich plum cake (made with whole grains) is again back as an old ex- on whom we still have a crush.

So when we were travelling to the southernmost Indian state Kerala, while passing through a place called Thalasserry, I got to know of a very interesting story about the origin of bakery in Kerala. We stopped by a bakery to get some confectionery and we were chatting between ourselves that most bakeries in Bangalore are owned by Keralites. A fellow standing close by must have overhear us and he pitched in to tell us how the first Christmas cake was baked by a Keralite who became famous so thereafter and his success made Keralites follow bakery business. By the way, here are our Kerala stories.

So once back from our trip, I make a video regarding the origin of the Christmas cake in India. I went through some sites to validate the information that I got and I am sharing the same story here. Read On...

The back-dop of the story is pre-independent India, somewhere in tbe coastal town Thalassarry in Kannur district of Kerala. An enterprising man named Mambally Bapu returned from Burma in 1880. He set up a shop in his village and named it the "The Royal Biscuit Factory'. While in Burma he used to work in a biscuit factory that used to make biscuits and bread for the British troops. So he operated his own biscuit shop armed with the knowledge he had and soon became popular with the British who used to frequent his shop for biscuits, rusks, bread and buns.

One day in 1883, a British cinnamon planter came to his shop. While chatting with Mambally Bapu, he showed him a rich plum cake and asked him if he could make such cakes. Although Mambally had never made cake before, but he readily agreed since he did not want to miss the business opportunity.

With some knowhow of how a cake is made from the British planter , Mambally Bapu started with his own experiments. To bring some local flavour to his creation, Mambally added his choicest spices from Kerala and also a special red banana which is also local to Kerala. Mambally's extra additions gave the cake a special taste and flavour.

Next year in December 20, 1884 Mambally presented his cake to the British planter. The planter so impressed on tasting the cake that he thanked Mambally saying that this was the best cake he had ever tasted. This is how Christmas cake originated in India. Soon news spread far and wide and the cake became immensely popular and along with it Mambally's business swelled. His family members soon spread his bakery business across the state.

Years that followed, the bakery business became one of Kerala's mainstream business. A lot of Keralites opened shops both in Kerala and outside. Even in Bangalore around 70% bakery shops are Keralite owned. So just like us, if you happen to be in Kerala during Christmas, do savour your taste buds with Mambally's Christmas cake.
