To start with, you must not miss any of the tea factory tours in the Ooty and Coonoor regions. There is no particular one. Any would do. But the tea factory tours consist of tea plantation view, tour of how tea is made and also a shop from where you can get fantastic Nilgiri Tea.

The next place in your list should be Emerald lake and Avalanche Lake which is pretty close to Ooty. This place is awesome and breath taking. You can get some of your life long poster shots from these locations.

Emerald Lake

Avalanche lake

Although a very common place, but Ooty lake should not be missed if you are having one or more little ones with you. Young crowd just love Ooty lake because of boating, different rides, chaat stalls and many more. One quick reminder. Don't try to buy seeds or bulbs of plants from the nearby shops. Most of the time, those are fake.

To enjoy Ooty nightlife and to bring back home some warm clothing at really attractive price, you must visit the Ooty Mall Road. Ooty mall road is more like a metropolitan cramped into a one square kilometer of area. Restaurants to cafes to cloth shops, its all here.

The final awe aspiring experience in the list must be the Nilgiri Express. This is a UNESCO world heritage rail road and the ride from Ooty to Coonoor is just straight from movies. Book premium class tickets before hand to avoid the crowded general compartments.

Tourist Places in South India | Kerala Only

Southern part of India is filled with wonders and heritage. The Nilgiris to Pondicherry, the whole of south India is full of mystics and majestic wonders. In this series of best places to visit in South India, we will progressively cover the places that you must visit once you are here. We will do this state by state. So let's start with the God's Own Country, Kerala.

Whenever the talk is on the air about tourist places in south India, Kerala perhaps appears first most of the time with the exception of Tamilnadu at times. This is not a co-incidence. The total footfall in Keral during the year 2018 was alone 150 lakh approximately. There is hardly any competitor in this field that comes close to Kerala. However, it's easy to get misguided and miss certain places and experiences in Keral that can become a life's asset. Here's we will list down 5 such places.

To start with, you must visit Alleppey or Allappuzha, which is sometimes referred to as Venice of south India. It's a wonderful connection of backwater canals through the villages of Kerala. You can not only enjoy natural air condition but also witness daily life of native people here. Stopping by to get fresh coconut water is a must do here. You can checkout our detailed blog post on Alleppey for more details.

In a Sikara
The next must visit place is Periyar. Periyar is not on tourists top 5 list most of the time and that is a big miss. It's a jaw dropping beauty in the heart of Kerala. The lake, the forest and the mist. It's just amazing. Do book a hotel close to the entrance of the Periyar lake because it's a rush for tickets at the wee hours of the day. You can get more details here on our blog post on Periyar.

During morning ride
Kochi city, i.e., old Kochi should also be in your must visit list. Chinese fishing nets in Fort Kochi to Jewish Synagogue, Kochi has so much to offer. Ernakulam, the new city also has a few cruse trips. Don't miss the sunset trip. More details in our detailed blog here.

Chinese Fishing Net

Synagogue

Kovalam beach which is close to capital city Trivandrum, must be visited because this crescent shaped beach can give you some amazing photographs. The sea fish stalls next to the beach are fresh as sea water. Trivandrum city has many city attractions ranging from the temple with Gold more than Fort Knox to the Casual Zoo. You can find more details here.

Kovalam Beach

Kovalam Beach

Kerala visit is not complete without the visit to the mystic mountains of Munnar. Although winter or summer might be the best time to visit this mountain range, monsoon holds a pleasant surprise for the hungry traveler. Do remember to visit the conversation for Mountain Goat. More details is there in our detailed blog.

Best Time To Visit Bhutan | Bhutan Tourism

Although we visited Bhutan during the month of June, that is not exactly the best time to visit Bhutan. During our visit we realized the primary reasons as to why June might not be the correct time to visit Bhutan.

TIger's Nest Monastery, Or Taktsang Monastery
To start with, there might be occasional rain fall that might blunder your travel. Most of the cities that we traveled ranging from Paro, Thimput to Punakha, we encountered rain for sure.

Near Stadium in Thumpu

Shop near Clock Tower of Thimpu
The other main issue is that there are multiple holidays during this period in Bhutan. Birth Anniversary of Guru Rinpoche is in the month of June. Not further away is the occasion for the First Sermon of Lord Buddha. Thus, you will find most government run tourist spots closed down during these days. And more importantly, you might not get permit to get to Punakha because the immigration offices are also closed during this dates.

Rather, October to December is the ideal time to visit Bhutan from a climate perspective. Although there are multiple holidays during this time period as well, ranging from "The Descending Day of Lord Buddha" to "National Day", the climate is just stunning during this time period. We would always recommend that you call up the hotels and look up the Bhutan Tourism website to properly plan your trip. You can always ask us here in the comments section as well. Happy journey!

St Mary's Island, the basalt wonder

We went to Udupi just for one reason... to visit St Mary's Island.
We had heard of this tiny island so much that it was on our secret self authored "10 Lakh Places to see before you Die" list for a long time.

We started driving from Murudeshwar towards Udupi at 3:30 PM. A long stretch of the road was bad, so reaching Udupi took a lot more time than expected. When we reached Udupi it was dark. We checked in a hotel "Hotel Rukmini Residency" on Mosque Road near City busstand. The rooms were clean and the rates very much resonable.Non AC double bedrooms at Rs700 per night and checkout time is 24 hours.

The next day we reached Malpe bus-stand at 9:00 AM. From our hotel, it was around 5 kms drive. The ferry dock is about 500 mtrs from the bus-stand.
That is where we had to go to book tickets for the ferry ride to St Mary's.
The counter opens at 9:30 AM and a minimum of 30 people are required for the ferry to start. The ferry charges Rs 100 per head that includes to and fro
journey from St Mary's Island.

Ship docked at the Malpe dock.
We were the first to book our tickets but had to wait for a modest half an hour for a team of 30 to gather. Finally our boat set to sail on the emerald water. The ferry occasionally swayed sideways and the cool sea breeze played around. The ferry went past some very small islands formed of only rocks.
Sometimes a flock of cranes would fly past.

This is the boat that takes you to the island
Finally we came close to the island which is about 7 kms away from the main land. We were transferred to smaller boats that finally took us to the island.

The small boat that transfers you to the island
The island is absolutely stunning. It is a small elongated strip of land.
The golden sand, the emerald water, the hexagonal basalt rocks, the coconut trees, the red crabs, the clear skies with white clouds and an endless view makes the island magical.

There was only one make shift shop on the island selling chips, water and fried fish. There was also water scooter for water sport enthusiasts.

We roamed on the island for almost an hour. The Sun had become very strong by then and we were sweating, so we got up on the boat that was taking people back. As the boat started, the cool sea breeze started playing around us and we were instantly cooled off and got refreshed.

The boat speed towards Malpe. In the next half an hour, we reached the disembarking point. As we were getting down, a couple that was waiting in the queue for thier trip asked us how the island was. We gave them a "Thumbs High" for we were very sure they too will have a wonderful island sojourn.

Nagarhole, a much cherished trip in the wild

Thanks to Ugadi.....we got a long weekend. If by chance you do not know what is "Ugadi" (we also did not know before moving to Bangalore) let me tell you its is the Kannada New Year. We had long planned a trip to Nagarhole in summer, since summer is the best time to spot wildlife in south India. The sun may be hot on your back but the animals might come near the few remaining water holes where you get a better chance of spotting them.

We started early in the morning at 5:00 am. The route that we took to reach Nagarhole was like this:
Bangalore -->Mysore-->Hunsur-->Nagarhole. The distance from Bangalore to Nagarhole is approximately 250 kms and the time required will be roughly 4-5 hours largely depending on how many breaks you take and at what time you leave Bangalore.

The road is good but for going towards Hunsur, there is no marker on the road, we had to ask the locals and they helped us generously. From Hunsur the road goes straight to Madikeri, so we had to take a left turn at Hunsur for Nagarhole. The road is beautiful with gulmohar trees bursting with red flowers on either side of the road. Some people were selling mangoes that were piled up on their vans to cars passing by.

On entering the National Park we had to make an entry at the first check post. Our tour itinery was pretty straight forward. First reach our host's place....... have breakfast/lunch and all....... then again go to the National Park for the jungle safari......spend the night at our host's place.......head out for Bangalore next morning.

To reach our homestay we had to cross the National Park and drive 2 kilometres towards Kutta. Since the speed limit inside the national park was 30 kms per hour we drove really really slow...at 20 kms and 2nd gear :). Soon we got lucky, I spotted something standing very still behind the bushes. I asked Ankur to stop the car and move a little back. There it was ...a big full sambar deer quietly standing behind the bushes. It was so well guarded by the dry bushed that had we drove faster I could have missed spotting this.

Sambar Deer

There was plenty of butterfiles all moving around in patches. Just after a few metres we were greeted by a group of spotted deer. The group consisted of bucks, does and some very cute calves.

We saw more deer on our way.....some crossing the road, some eating and some caressing their babies.
We also spotted some common monkeys. We heard so many birds's songs......mostly all the sound were unfamiliar to a city ear. Sometimes we stopped the car to see what was making the sound but for novices it was difficult.

We reached our homestay. The owner Mr Narendra Pattu and his wife were really really nice . They had already kept our breakfast ready. We had heard so much about Coorg cuisine and at Mr Pattu's house we tasted the real Coorgi food and I have to say it was mind blowing. Mr Pattu 's homestay is inside his coffee estate. After our late breakfast we strolled in his coffee estate . It was so nice and relaxing. We found elephant excreta and Mr Pattu told us that elephants sometimes come at night in his coffee estate.

We were supposed to take the after noon jungle safari. So after lunch we again drove into the forest. Again saw deer. But luck had sometime special for us. We saw a lone tusker.......yes it was playing all by itself on the side of the road. We took his photos and waved him bye...thanking him for standing there and allowing us to take his photos.

Next we saw some more deer, magnificent nilgiri langoors and giant malabar squirrels. On reaching the safari office we bought safari tickets. There is only 1 hour bus safari that costs Rs 300 per head. Camera is not charged extra.

The safari bus took us in the deeper jungles and also near to some water bodies. We spotted more deer, sambhar, elephant, peacock, turtles, monkeys, nilgiri langoors, nilgiri gaurs ,parrots, minivets and some storks and ibises.

The day was well spent. The next day we woke up early. In Nagarhole there is no need for an alarm clock to get up early. The birds will do that for you. After tea we bid Mr Pattu bye. They were such nice hosts.

In the morning the forest road looks enchanting....half misty and sunlight streaking in through all possible entries.

We spotted some big malabar squirrels happily nibbling on the tree leaves. Then again there were lots and lots of deer. Next to sight was a nilgiri gaur. We were stopped by the shrill cries of a red-wattled lapwing who was strictly monitoring her little ones.We spotted the dad lapwing close by having his breakfast.

Then we saw two nilgiri langoors enjoying the morning sun. They looked so beautiful with the early sunlight sharp on them.

The prize sighting of this tour came next. The full credit goes to Ankur. While I was looking up the trees to see any leopards Ankur slowed the car and said me in a hush," Look to our left just on the side to the road. There is a bear". Before I could believe my ears I saw a big black bear near to my car window. The bear stayed for a few seconds before quickly crossing over to the other side of the jungle and disappeared.
I never expected this big a SURPRISE!!

Next we spotted a big sized elephant, but soon it went deeper into the jungle. Then we saw a few cuckoos playing on the ground. We heard some wild dogs but could not see them. Then again Ankur spotted some gaurs. We saw more deer and some chameleons crossing the road.

On the way we saw quite a few racked tail drongos and finally Ankur managed to click one. We also saw parasise flycatchers and some other birds. Our jungle road came to an end when we approached the checkpost. Now its time to head to city leaving the nature's nest behind.

Nagarhole was a memorable trip and we are sure to visit Nagarhole very soon.
