Malpe Beach , One of the most beautiful beaches of Coastal Karnataka Part - 1

For a long long time, we have not been out of our house. The last trip we had this year was to Kolkata sometime in February this year, much before the Covid-19 nuisance entered our country. Then followed the 3 months lockdown. Now that things are slowly opening up and most tourist places, hotels are equipped to welcome guests with all safety precautions we thought of travel. Ankur bought a DJI Mavic mini drone. Here's the unboxing link to that in case you are interested  in drones. We also had our marriage anniversary, and so we thought of clubbing both the things together and enjoy a short trip to Malpe. The experience that I gathered regarding how to travel safely and smartly during covid, that I will share in a separate blog. So right now lets get into the story.

As many of you must be knowing, Malpe is a beautiful beach destination in Karnataka, some 450 kms from Bangalore. This beach is not as famous as it's sister beaches in Goa but its definitely the dark horse. The reason is its beautiful, less crowded, has a 1 km sea-walk that is newly build and the food of the place tastes good. Also there are some amazing very less known places around Malpe that we discovered that I will be writing about in the next part of this Malpe series blog.

We were a little late than usual. We started from our home at around 7 AM. The route we followed was Bangalore -> Tumkur -> Hassan -> Mangalore -> Malpe. Our nice comfy car was from Revv. The road was good except some stretches in Ghat Road. We had taken our lunch with us from home because we did not wanted to get down and have food at any restaurant, an exception we did because of covid.

We reached our hotel at 4 PM. Ankur had booked the Paradise Isle Beach Resort, the day before. The location of this resort is the best in Malpe, its just on the side of the road beside Malpe beach. Once we reached the resort they checked our temperature and sanitised our belongings after which they carried it to our room.

We had booked a sea-facing room. The room is nice, the bathroom was big and clean with an attached bathing tub. We had a nice balcony with unobstructed view of the beach. Also breakfast was included in the room tariff. The only thing we felt missing was lift, just in case older people are staying in the first floor.

After having tea and mixed veg pakodas, sitting on the balcony and enjoying the sea breeze on our face, we decided to go to the beach. When we visited Malpe some three years back, the beach was dirty, however this time we found that a lot of reforms have been done. The beaches are clean, there are sun shades along the coast, passerby-seats, some beautiful statues and a 1 km sea-walk into the sea and lots of shops. Whoa!!

We took the shortcut to the beach, the shortcut road is opposite to our hotel just a bit on the left. After the first turn of the road, you get the sea on one side and small fisherman houses on the other. There are fishing boats parked closeby. Ankur took some beautiful sunset time-lapses. We had plans for the sea-walk but it started raining. So we had to get back to our car.  Since it was already dark, there was nothing much to do for the remaining day. I had not packed my slippers so we went to Udupi town to get one. The next day will be eventful. We have Marvanthe, Kaup, beach walk and so many things lined up...

DJI Mavic Mini Fly More Combo - Unboxing

Since we started vlogging, we wanted to add more creativity and perspective to our story telling. Although a good vlogging camera and a gimball are still the most essential components for travel vlogging, but we felt that we could add that 'extra more' perspective with drone footage.

So the latest addition that we did to our travel gear is the DJI Mavic Mini Fly More Combo. And oh boy, its such a killer! We have already used the mavic mini extensively in our latest trip to Malpe. The vlogs will be coming very soon within a week to our travel Youtube channel and you will get to see the amazing drone footages that we have been able to capture.

Ankur will talk separately about his experiences with the DJI Mavic Mini in a separate post but for the time being I want to show you all the unboxing of the DJI Mavic Mini.

Please enjoy and share with your acquaintances if anyone is planning to buy a drone. We bought the drone from DJI Bangalore store and are extremely happy with the product we got. Do check it out in the video and incase you want to reach out to the store, catch them on instagram @djibangalore

Christmas Cake Story in India

As a child in a modest Bengali household, the anticipation of whats in my lunch box today specially after seeing 'Bapuji' cakes lying on the breakfast table which my father bought in the morning was immense. At that point of time, the rich brown plum cake during Christmas was always more special with the adults in the family than with the children. We children some why loved the small tiffin cakes and the cream roles. Later when sophisticated bakeries such as 'Jolojog' came to existence the love for the humble cake was replaces by pastries and richly frosted cakes.

However now that we are in our 30's, the love for pastries is again somewhat mild, thanks to health journals, posts, nutritionists we now know that we should heavily cut our sugar intake more so if our lifestyle is sedentary. So the humble rich plum cake (made with whole grains) is again back as an old ex- on whom we still have a crush.

So when we were travelling to the southernmost Indian state Kerala, while passing through a place called Thalasserry, I got to know of a very interesting story about the origin of bakery in Kerala. We stopped by a bakery to get some confectionery and we were chatting between ourselves that most bakeries in Bangalore are owned by Keralites. A fellow standing close by must have overhear us and he pitched in to tell us how the first Christmas cake was baked by a Keralite who became famous so thereafter and his success made Keralites follow bakery business. By the way, here are our Kerala stories.

So once back from our trip, I make a video regarding the origin of the Christmas cake in India. I went through some sites to validate the information that I got and I am sharing the same story here. Read On...

The back-dop of the story is pre-independent India, somewhere in tbe coastal town Thalassarry in Kannur district of Kerala. An enterprising man named Mambally Bapu returned from Burma in 1880. He set up a shop in his village and named it the "The Royal Biscuit Factory'. While in Burma he used to work in a biscuit factory that used to make biscuits and bread for the British troops. So he operated his own biscuit shop armed with the knowledge he had and soon became popular with the British who used to frequent his shop for biscuits, rusks, bread and buns.

One day in 1883, a British cinnamon planter came to his shop. While chatting with Mambally Bapu, he showed him a rich plum cake and asked him if he could make such cakes. Although Mambally had never made cake before, but he readily agreed since he did not want to miss the business opportunity.

With some knowhow of how a cake is made from the British planter , Mambally Bapu started with his own experiments. To bring some local flavour to his creation, Mambally added his choicest spices from Kerala and also a special red banana which is also local to Kerala. Mambally's extra additions gave the cake a special taste and flavour.

Next year in December 20, 1884 Mambally presented his cake to the British planter. The planter so impressed on tasting the cake that he thanked Mambally saying that this was the best cake he had ever tasted. This is how Christmas cake originated in India. Soon news spread far and wide and the cake became immensely popular and along with it Mambally's business swelled. His family members soon spread his bakery business across the state.

Years that followed, the bakery business became one of Kerala's mainstream business. A lot of Keralites opened shops both in Kerala and outside. Even in Bangalore around 70% bakery shops are Keralite owned. So just like us, if you happen to be in Kerala during Christmas, do savour your taste buds with Mambally's Christmas cake.

Chota Ladakh, half day trip from Bangalore

Covid has put a major halt to all our major travel plans. This year we had our Ladakh trip planned in September, which we eventually had to cancel. So while discussing about it with my husband, we thought why don't we plan a half day trip to this '60 km far place' from Bangalore that now goes by its new nomenclature 'Chota Ladakh'.

A leisurely early start from our home after gorging home made aloo parathas and lassi, we made the start.
From Whitefield its roughly one and half  hours drive during these covid times since the roads are empty. At normal times we would have stopped by Empire restaurant but we settled for two takeaway coffees from CCD. For most of the road we took help from Google maps. Once we approached close to the place the roads became rough, narrow and full with stone. There is no markings as to where 'Chota Ladakh' is. We had to ask some locals. There is no road that leads to the lake and one has to walk almost half a kilometre to reach the lake. While returning back we came to know that this place is actually closed by authorities since there has been way too many deaths that has happened because of people slipping into the lake and drowning.

Just like everyone, I was also curious as how this remote place got its name which relates to Ladakh. So I read up a few websites and came to know of the story. When the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) decided to upgrade the Bangalore-Chennai (NH4) highway to 4 lane, the NHAI authorities took quarry land for keeping all the construction material such as stone chips, gravel. Because of the weight of the construction materials, the quarry land further deepened into a huge pit and in course of time, the pit got filled with water. Since the pit was formed inside of a hillock so during daytime, the water in the pit gets a deep blue colour because of the reflection. This place was eventually discovered by some enthusiastic college youths from Bangalore who gave it the name 'Chota Ladakh' and in the era of social media the place became popular.

Now coming to my personal opinion about this place, did I like it or do I recommend anyone to go there? My one word answer is 'NO'. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing to go there to waste your time, enery and money for. The place is not developed, there are no proper roads which leads to the place, it does not anyway look like Ladakh at all. Moreover the water in the lake is poisonous with harmful chemicals and there have been at least 20 cases of deaths because of drowning in this pit. Also the water does not look blue.

So please whoever reading this blog, please abstain from owing to this place since the place will not only disappoint you but is also dangerous. Instead visit Nandi Hills, Krishnagiri, Machinabele if you are looking for a short trip.
