This post is just for summarizing our Udupi trip. If you are coming to Karnataka as a tourist or if you want to explore a significant cultural part of Karnataka, then you must come to Udupi. Udupi is a coastal city known for its temples, food, pristine beaches, backwaters and fresh fishes.
To reach Udupi, the easiest way is by car/bus or train. You need to come to Mangalore from where Udupi is almost an hour's drive. Mangalore has its own beach, although not very popular.
Beaches:
The most famous beach is Malpe. Quite recently Malpe has got its own sea walkway. A boat ride to the nearest St Mary's Island should not be missed at any cost. However remember that the boat service is suspended during rainy season.
The sea food that is available at any local restaurant is absolutely delicious since they cook the fresh catch of the day. Do not forget to taste the mackerel else pomfret masala fry with some prawn ghee roast. Also mangalore bun for a quick snack is absolutely awesome.
Another extremely beautiful beach is the Kapu beach. Kapu beach has its own lighthouse as well in which visitors are allowed to go between 5pm to 6pm.
A little far from Udupi is Kundapura. One needs to cross the toll booth to reach Maravanthe in Kundapura. As per Outlook Traveller, Maravanthe is one of Karnataka's most beautiful beaches. A drive to Maravanthe is an absolute must. One one side of the road is the sea and on the other side is the back water.
Finally this is not all. Udupi has its own lagoon and delta of the Suvarna river, which is close to Hoode beach. There are some options to stay close to the lagoon.
The drive from Bangalore to Udupi will take around 8 hours depending on the weather and traffic. The road is mostly good except for some 40 km in the Ghat road stretch. The best time to visit Udupi is during the winter months.
So after lunch at Paradise Isle Resort at Malpe we headed for Paradise Lagoon Resort. By the time we left the first hotel it was almost 4 PM. It was a very late checkout although the hotel authorities did not. I suppose it was because of very less guests due to covid and also because we were moving to another property of the same hotel group.
Just like Paradise Isle Resort was right on the Malpe beach and we could enjoy the sea view from our room, Paradise Lagoon Resort was on an island surrounded by a lagoon so we could enjoy the lagoon right from our room. After thermal checking we were transferred to our room. The room that was given to us was really huge. It had nice flooring and ceiling but I would have been happier if the room had at least one bright light because although there were many lights in the rooms but they all were light and fluorescent. It gives a nice feel to the room but while eating or doing some work with our laptops we would any day have preferred bright light. Also we really wished there were tubs in the washrooms.

We did not waste much time, and got out to see the Hoode beach and the Delta Point. The Hoode beach as we found out is a totally virgin beach and does not have any infrastructure such as benches, food stalls, water activities for tourists. You just need to park your car somewhere and walk upto the beach. It is lonely and if you love to hear the sound of waves splashing on the yellow sand in solitude, then this beach is for you. Also the beach is ideal for some sunset shots. By the time we parked our car to see the beach the slight drizzle that was already there for sometime, turned into heavy rain.
Next we drove to Delta Point. This is the place where the river Suvarna meets the Arabian Sea. Since there are no markers on the road we had to rely on Google maps for direction. We parked our car at a place after which we had to walk 500 meters to reach the delta. The place is also still not ready for tourists hence not really very clean and lacks infrastructure. However one can see very distinctly where the river ends up in the sea. This was the real take from the destination.

Since it was getting dark and the rain was refusing to go completely, we headed back to where we were staying. On the way we stopped by a shop selling tea, patties and cream buns. Since this place is serene and not commercialised as Malpe, expect very less shops, restaurants and other amenities of a busy touristy place. This place is more to sit back, chill and enjoy the break from a hectic city life.
Our dinner was simple: rice, chicken curry and pomfret masala fry. The food was sort of okay, but the service of Mr Philipe was really extremely nice. A very gentle and a nice man who took good care of all our requests. With food in his hand he would stand outside the door and call instead of knocking so that our children's sleep is not disturbed.
Next day, we had a plan for boat house, but since it was rained heavily the night before, the boat house service was closed. We had our complimentary breakfast on our balcony overlooking the lagoon. There was not much morning activity except one lone fisherman catching some fishes with his net.We strolled the entire property in the morning, something we did not do the day before. There is greenery wherever you look and also there are beautiful benches under shades for sitting and enjoying the lagoon.
By noon we were already on the road on our way back to Bangalore. A quick stop at Malpe to buy some dry and wet Mangalorean fish and chicken spices and a farewell bid to the mighty Arabian ocean till we are back again on another trip.

And as usual, there is the video. Check it out and if you like so Share and Subscribe:
On the third day, we were supposed to leave our hotel Paradise Island Resort go to another property of the same hotel chain situated at the lagoon. It is approximately 6 km from Malpe beach. The day was sunny and bright. So after we had our breakfast of idlis, bread and fresh fruits we first went to the Malpe Sea Walk Way.
The Walk way is the first of its kind in Karnataka inaugurated in 2018. Last time when we came to Malpe, this sea walk way was not there. Walking on the Sea Walkway, we could literally feel that we are amid the sea. There is water on either side of the Sea Walk Way and at the far distance we could see the St Mary's Island and nearer the Bhadargad Island. The sea air was super rejuvenating and so walking the 450 metres was nothing short of cake walk. Midway there is a nice golden statue of a fisherman's family made with sand and cement. The fisherman carrying an oar faces West signifying he is headed for fishing to the sea. He faces West because Malpe is on the West coast of India. His wife with a basket on her head faces East signifying she is going to the market to sell the fishes. Their child is carrying a bag, accompanying them en route school. Just imagine how beautiful and thoughtful.

Since it was also Independence Day, there was some special activities that were going on the sea. We saw more than a 100 boats in some sort of parade on the sea. It was just looking like some scene out of a movie!

We could not visit the St Mary's Island this time, although we have been to St Mary's many times before because the boat service has not yet started post monsoon. On enquiry we got to know that the boat service will resume from 1st October. Giving some of our old photos of St Mary's Island.

Next we went to Kaup beach. Kaup, locally pronounced as Kapu is some 25km from Malpe. We went past the Stella Mary's Church which is structured like a ship. Its really beautiful and I suggest you see it if you have time. We also crossed a temple which I suppose is a Durga Temple because I saw a structure of goddess Durga in the 'Mahisamardini' pose on the gate. This is the first time I saw Durga temple in South India. As you might already know, Durga is the most popular goddess among the Bengalis.
Kaup (Kapu) beach is one of the most beautiful beach of Karnataka and the beach is kept in the most impeccable condition by the tourism authority. There is a lighthouse on the beach which is accessible to tourists only between 5 pm - 6 pm. There are several seats from where one can get an unobstructed view of the sea and the lighthouse. Also there are a few refreshment shops and a paid parking. We highly recommend this beach if you are visiting Udupi.

Malpe Padukar - Pangala Road on Gmap
Malpe Padukar - Pangala Road - Arial View
While returning back to our hotel, Google suggested us to take the Malpe Padukar - Pangala Road. Previously the road was not in the good, but now its in very good condition. Its only a little narrow at some places. This thin stretch of land branches out of the Indian subcontinent only to join it a little later. And trust me this stretch looks so marvellous that you will be tempted to take this route at least one more time to admire its beauty. On one side of this narrow strip of road you will see the deep blue Arabian waves clashing on the shore and on to your other side you have a long stretch of lagoon and lineup of coconut trees. You get to enjoy both simultaneously as you drive through this stretch. You can stop by the almost empty Mattu beach to click a photo. Don't miss out the video that I am attaching in the blog. You will get to see some of the stunning arial footages of this place. It is one of Udupi's best kept secrets, so you can thank me later.
The telephone rang at 9 AM. I picked it up. The voice from the other end told that breakfast is ready and whether we would like to have it in our room. Previous day we had told the staff that we wish to have our breakfast at 9 in the morning. Breakfast was really wholesome. We were given two plates of Mangalore buns with coconut chutney, two omelettes, two bowls of cornflakes, a jar of milk, two plates of assorted cut fruits, two glasses of fresh watermelon juice. It was then followed by tea. Since we always prefer local cuisines of any place, the freshly made sweet, soft and fluffy mangalore buns were instant hit among Ankur and me. We enjoyed it sitting in our balcony accompanied by the sea breeze and some crow's cacophony.
The fishing yard from our hotel was less than 1 km far. Actually there was a shortcut by which we could enter the fishing yard from the back. Because of covid, there were very less people in the yard. Also Government does not allow large scale fishing in India during the months of June,July and August since during this time the fishes release their eggs. So we saw a few thousands of fishing boats and trawlers that were. parked because of the 'no-fishing' rule.
We started for Maravanthe beach which was some 54 km from Malpe. From Malpe we went towards Kundapura. The road is good and has one toll booth. The most beautiful thing I remember about the road to Kundapura is that there are some stretches of road where there are waterbodies on both sides. Those might be some distributaries and they have tiny little uninhabited islands on them which have been formed by the soil brought down by the river. Those lush green tiny islands on both sides look so beautiful while passing through the road.
Maravanthe is both a village and a beach near Kundapura. As per Outlook Traveller it is one of Karnataka's most beautiful beaches. And as per us, it truly is. National Highway 66, connecting Murudeshwar to Mangalore runs next to the beach and the Suparnika river flows on the other side of the road, which creates a wonderful spectacular scenery that is considered to be the only one of its kind in India. There is ample of parking space to keep your car on the leeway but getting down on the beach is prohibited since the beach is not safe.
We enjoyed the place for almost half an hour. I don't know how to describe the beauty and the uniqueness of the place. On one side of the highway there is the vast openness of the Arabian Sea and on the other side the lush greenery of the coconut tress and the calm wide river. However there are very few toilets or restaurants/hotels nearby. This is seriously a must visit place if someone is coming to coastal Karnataka or Karavali.
On the way back to our hotel we stopped at a local restaurant. We had been to this eatery before as well when we last visited Malpe some 3 years back. That time it was a small shop and at time we had the best pomfret fry and some coastal fish gravy made with small fishes for lunch. The food was so good that this time we did not dare to miss it. We took a whole lot of stuffs - kane rawa fry ( lady fish fried with semolina ), prawn ghee roast, bhangra pullimunchi, pomfret masala fry along with red rice and one vegetable dish.
The rest of the day was not much eventful. We strolled on the beach in the evening and went to bed for an early sleep. The next day is planned for Kaup beach (locally pronounced as Kapu) and lighthouse and also the popular Malpe sea-walk.

For a long long time, we have not been out of our house. The last trip we had this year was to Kolkata sometime in February this year, much before the Covid-19 nuisance entered our country. Then followed the 3 months lockdown. Now that things are slowly opening up and most tourist places, hotels are equipped to welcome guests with all safety precautions we thought of travel. Ankur bought a DJI Mavic mini drone. Here's the unboxing link to that in case you are interested in drones. We also had our marriage anniversary, and so we thought of clubbing both the things together and enjoy a short trip to Malpe. The experience that I gathered regarding how to travel safely and smartly during covid, that I will share in a separate blog. So right now lets get into the story.
As many of you must be knowing, Malpe is a beautiful beach destination in Karnataka, some 450 kms from Bangalore. This beach is not as famous as it's sister beaches in Goa but its definitely the dark horse. The reason is its beautiful, less crowded, has a 1 km sea-walk that is newly build and the food of the place tastes good. Also there are some amazing very less known places around Malpe that we discovered that I will be writing about in the next part of this Malpe series blog.
We were a little late than usual. We started from our home at around 7 AM. The route we followed was Bangalore -> Tumkur -> Hassan -> Mangalore -> Malpe. Our nice comfy car was from Revv. The road was good except some stretches in Ghat Road. We had taken our lunch with us from home because we did not wanted to get down and have food at any restaurant, an exception we did because of covid.
We reached our hotel at 4 PM. Ankur had booked the Paradise Isle Beach Resort, the day before. The location of this resort is the best in Malpe, its just on the side of the road beside Malpe beach. Once we reached the resort they checked our temperature and sanitised our belongings after which they carried it to our room.
We had booked a sea-facing room. The room is nice, the bathroom was big and clean with an attached bathing tub. We had a nice balcony with unobstructed view of the beach. Also breakfast was included in the room tariff. The only thing we felt missing was lift, just in case older people are staying in the first floor.
After having tea and mixed veg pakodas, sitting on the balcony and enjoying the sea breeze on our face, we decided to go to the beach. When we visited Malpe some three years back, the beach was dirty, however this time we found that a lot of reforms have been done. The beaches are clean, there are sun shades along the coast, passerby-seats, some beautiful statues and a 1 km sea-walk into the sea and lots of shops. Whoa!!
We took the shortcut to the beach, the shortcut road is opposite to our hotel just a bit on the left. After the first turn of the road, you get the sea on one side and small fisherman houses on the other. There are fishing boats parked closeby. Ankur took some beautiful sunset time-lapses. We had plans for the sea-walk but it started raining. So we had to get back to our car. Since it was already dark, there was nothing much to do for the remaining day. I had not packed my slippers so we went to Udupi town to get one. The next day will be eventful. We have Marvanthe, Kaup, beach walk and so many things lined up...

Since we started vlogging, we wanted to add more creativity and perspective to our story telling. Although a good vlogging camera and a gimball are still the most essential components for travel vlogging, but we felt that we could add that 'extra more' perspective with drone footage.
So the latest addition that we did to our travel gear is the DJI Mavic Mini Fly More Combo. And oh boy, its such a killer! We have already used the mavic mini extensively in our latest trip to Malpe. The vlogs will be coming very soon within a week to our travel Youtube channel and you will get to see the amazing drone footages that we have been able to capture.
Ankur will talk separately about his experiences with the DJI Mavic Mini in a separate post but for the time being I want to show you all the unboxing of the DJI Mavic Mini.
Please enjoy and share with your acquaintances if anyone is planning to buy a drone. We bought the drone from DJI Bangalore store and are extremely happy with the product we got. Do check it out in the video and incase you want to reach out to the store, catch them on instagram @djibangalore

As a child in a modest Bengali household, the anticipation of whats in my lunch box today specially after seeing 'Bapuji' cakes lying on the breakfast table which my father bought in the morning was immense. At that point of time, the rich brown plum cake during Christmas was always more special with the adults in the family than with the children. We children some why loved the small tiffin cakes and the cream roles. Later when sophisticated bakeries such as 'Jolojog' came to existence the love for the humble cake was replaces by pastries and richly frosted cakes.
However now that we are in our 30's, the love for pastries is again somewhat mild, thanks to health journals, posts, nutritionists we now know that we should heavily cut our sugar intake more so if our lifestyle is sedentary. So the humble rich plum cake (made with whole grains) is again back as an old ex- on whom we still have a crush.
So when we were travelling to the southernmost Indian state Kerala, while passing through a place called Thalasserry, I got to know of a very interesting story about the origin of bakery in Kerala. We stopped by a bakery to get some confectionery and we were chatting between ourselves that most bakeries in Bangalore are owned by Keralites. A fellow standing close by must have overhear us and he pitched in to tell us how the first Christmas cake was baked by a Keralite who became famous so thereafter and his success made Keralites follow bakery business. By the way, here are our Kerala stories.
So once back from our trip, I make a video regarding the origin of the Christmas cake in India. I went through some sites to validate the information that I got and I am sharing the same story here. Read On...
The back-dop of the story is pre-independent India, somewhere in tbe coastal town Thalassarry in Kannur district of Kerala. An enterprising man named Mambally Bapu returned from Burma in 1880. He set up a shop in his village and named it the "The Royal Biscuit Factory'. While in Burma he used to work in a biscuit factory that used to make biscuits and bread for the British troops. So he operated his own biscuit shop armed with the knowledge he had and soon became popular with the British who used to frequent his shop for biscuits, rusks, bread and buns.
One day in 1883, a British cinnamon planter came to his shop. While chatting with Mambally Bapu, he showed him a rich plum cake and asked him if he could make such cakes. Although Mambally had never made cake before, but he readily agreed since he did not want to miss the business opportunity.
With some knowhow of how a cake is made from the British planter , Mambally Bapu started with his own experiments. To bring some local flavour to his creation, Mambally added his choicest spices from Kerala and also a special red banana which is also local to Kerala. Mambally's extra additions gave the cake a special taste and flavour.
Next year in December 20, 1884 Mambally presented his cake to the British planter. The planter so impressed on tasting the cake that he thanked Mambally saying that this was the best cake he had ever tasted. This is how Christmas cake originated in India. Soon news spread far and wide and the cake became immensely popular and along with it Mambally's business swelled. His family members soon spread his bakery business across the state.
Years that followed, the bakery business became one of Kerala's mainstream business. A lot of Keralites opened shops both in Kerala and outside. Even in Bangalore around 70% bakery shops are Keralite owned. So just like us, if you happen to be in Kerala during Christmas, do savour your taste buds with Mambally's Christmas cake.

Covid has put a major halt to all our major travel plans. This year we had our Ladakh trip planned in September, which we eventually had to cancel. So while discussing about it with my husband, we thought why don't we plan a half day trip to this '60 km far place' from Bangalore that now goes by its new nomenclature 'Chota Ladakh'.
A leisurely early start from our home after gorging home made aloo parathas and lassi, we made the start.
From Whitefield its roughly one and half hours drive during these covid times since the roads are empty. At normal times we would have stopped by Empire restaurant but we settled for two takeaway coffees from CCD. For most of the road we took help from Google maps. Once we approached close to the place the roads became rough, narrow and full with stone. There is no markings as to where 'Chota Ladakh' is. We had to ask some locals. There is no road that leads to the lake and one has to walk almost half a kilometre to reach the lake. While returning back we came to know that this place is actually closed by authorities since there has been way too many deaths that has happened because of people slipping into the lake and drowning.
Just like everyone, I was also curious as how this remote place got its name which relates to Ladakh. So I read up a few websites and came to know of the story. When the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) decided to upgrade the Bangalore-Chennai (NH4) highway to 4 lane, the NHAI authorities took quarry land for keeping all the construction material such as stone chips, gravel. Because of the weight of the construction materials, the quarry land further deepened into a huge pit and in course of time, the pit got filled with water. Since the pit was formed inside of a hillock so during daytime, the water in the pit gets a deep blue colour because of the reflection. This place was eventually discovered by some enthusiastic college youths from Bangalore who gave it the name 'Chota Ladakh' and in the era of social media the place became popular.
Now coming to my personal opinion about this place, did I like it or do I recommend anyone to go there? My one word answer is 'NO'. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing to go there to waste your time, enery and money for. The place is not developed, there are no proper roads which leads to the place, it does not anyway look like Ladakh at all. Moreover the water in the lake is poisonous with harmful chemicals and there have been at least 20 cases of deaths because of drowning in this pit. Also the water does not look blue.
So please whoever reading this blog, please abstain from owing to this place since the place will not only disappoint you but is also dangerous. Instead visit Nandi Hills, Krishnagiri, Machinabele if you are looking for a short trip.

We had a quick visit to Kolkata in mid February because of some work that had to be done. Once the work got over and we had a few spare days, it got us into thinking where to go. As most of you would agree that winter is the best time to visit beaches in India, our plan was also to hit the beach.
Our goal for a beach holiday was to relax. So we stroke off Digha since it is too touristy. Instead we choose Mandarmoni. Mandarmani is a 13km long flat drivable beach, although driving on the beach is now no more allowed.
If you wish to see our video before reading further , the video link is here :
Our plan was to start from my home ( South Kolkata ) at 6 am. Since we had 4 adults and two kids travelling so we booked a SUV500 from Revv for 3 days. Finally we could start only at 9 am.
Our route was the usual one :
Kolkata -> Kolaghat -> Nandakumar -> Contai -> Mandarmani
The condition of the road was good throughout and we had to pay toll tax at two places. The availability of good restaurants ( by good I mean the restaurant's washrooms also need to be equally good ) is less and most are concentrated at Kolaghat. While going we stopped at a very basic but good restaurant on the way and had our lunch thalis.
At around 3PM we reached our resort Candlewood park Resort. We booked two huts through Goibibo and it is one of the best family resorts in Mandarmani. The staff is well behaved, everything is very well maintained and the resort has direct access to the beach. What more could anyone ask for!
After checking in, we ordered for tea and some toast. We freshened up, had our snacks and then went for the beach. The resort has direct access to the beach and as far as one could see, its a flat land. It was low tide and the sea had gone quite far. I walked for some 30 minutes on the beach enjoying the warm sun and the water on my feet. I collected some seashells and cowrie shells....yes you read right...cowrie shells. But I believe in not taking things home from where they belong, so before getting back to our resort, I gave my collected shells back to the sea.
Ankur had to go out to buy medicines since my mother had forgotten to put it in the bag before leaving home. Only our resort had a dedicated auto stand. So he took an auto from there instead of the car because autowallahs are locals who will be knowing where medicine shops are.Transportation in Mandarmani can be a headache if one does not have his/ her own vehicle. Thankfully the resort where we stayed had an auto-stand. Also pharmacy shops are few and quite far.
We leisured for some more time on the beach beds after which we ordered for chicken and fish barbecue. The food was heavenly good but expensive. We had our dinner at the hotel. Quantity and quality of the food was good. We had rice, daal, two type of vegetable curry and fish.
Next day morning we started for the estuary, locally known as 'mohona'. It is a place known for red crab. We went there for red crab sightings. The trick is to go when the sun is overhead. We parked our car at the designated place and walked some 500 metres on the beach. We saw few hundreds of red crabs far away. Some were twice the size of my palm. But the moment someone walks towards them, they get into their holes. It was really difficult to click them.
See the video here:
Next we wanted to see the crab and prawn cultivation by local farmers in their embankments. However we got to know that in February there is no cultivation, it starts from March end/ April onwards.
Evening was spend on the beach. Earlier we had a plan of visiting Digha but then we dropped it. Our main purpose for this trip was relaxation.
Next day we have to head back home. The checkout time was 10 am. So we got ready. We had our breakfast of 'luchi and aloo torkari' ( puri and aloo subzi ). The food was amazing and we enjoyed the meal before heading back to Kolkata . The only negative that I can say of this resort is they take long time to deliver breakfast orders. So its better to order breakfast well before hunger drives you crazy.
It was a wonderful short trip and below are some important information you may require if you are also planning to go.
Travel Time : Winter months Hotel : Candlewood Resorts Distance from Kolkata : 180 kms , two toll stations Other good hotels : Hotel Aquamarina Hotel Viceroy
