The telephone rang at 9 AM. I picked it up. The voice from the other end told that breakfast is ready and whether we would like to have it in our room. Previous day we had told the staff that we wish to have our breakfast at 9 in the morning. Breakfast was really wholesome. We were given two plates of Mangalore buns with coconut chutney, two omelettes, two bowls of cornflakes, a jar of milk, two plates of assorted cut fruits, two glasses of fresh watermelon juice. It was then followed by tea. Since we always prefer local cuisines of any place, the freshly made sweet, soft and fluffy mangalore buns were instant hit among Ankur and me. We enjoyed it sitting in our balcony accompanied by the sea breeze and some crow's cacophony.
The fishing yard from our hotel was less than 1 km far. Actually there was a shortcut by which we could enter the fishing yard from the back. Because of covid, there were very less people in the yard. Also Government does not allow large scale fishing in India during the months of June,July and August since during this time the fishes release their eggs. So we saw a few thousands of fishing boats and trawlers that were. parked because of the 'no-fishing' rule.
We started for Maravanthe beach which was some 54 km from Malpe. From Malpe we went towards Kundapura. The road is good and has one toll booth. The most beautiful thing I remember about the road to Kundapura is that there are some stretches of road where there are waterbodies on both sides. Those might be some distributaries and they have tiny little uninhabited islands on them which have been formed by the soil brought down by the river. Those lush green tiny islands on both sides look so beautiful while passing through the road.
Maravanthe is both a village and a beach near Kundapura. As per Outlook Traveller it is one of Karnataka's most beautiful beaches. And as per us, it truly is. National Highway 66, connecting Murudeshwar to Mangalore runs next to the beach and the Suparnika river flows on the other side of the road, which creates a wonderful spectacular scenery that is considered to be the only one of its kind in India. There is ample of parking space to keep your car on the leeway but getting down on the beach is prohibited since the beach is not safe.
We enjoyed the place for almost half an hour. I don't know how to describe the beauty and the uniqueness of the place. On one side of the highway there is the vast openness of the Arabian Sea and on the other side the lush greenery of the coconut tress and the calm wide river. However there are very few toilets or restaurants/hotels nearby. This is seriously a must visit place if someone is coming to coastal Karnataka or Karavali.
On the way back to our hotel we stopped at a local restaurant. We had been to this eatery before as well when we last visited Malpe some 3 years back. That time it was a small shop and at time we had the best pomfret fry and some coastal fish gravy made with small fishes for lunch. The food was so good that this time we did not dare to miss it. We took a whole lot of stuffs - kane rawa fry ( lady fish fried with semolina ), prawn ghee roast, bhangra pullimunchi, pomfret masala fry along with red rice and one vegetable dish.
The rest of the day was not much eventful. We strolled on the beach in the evening and went to bed for an early sleep. The next day is planned for Kaup beach (locally pronounced as Kapu) and lighthouse and also the popular Malpe sea-walk.
